The Origin and Scope of Chiropractic Profession
“Old Dad Chiro” was the other name by which the founder of Chiropractic used to be called. He is Dr. Daniel David Palmer of Iowa. It is said that the word “chiropractic” was suggested by one of Dr. Palmer’s patients who is a minister. Literally meant as “done by hand”, the word is a combination of the Greek words cheiros (hand) and praktos (done by).
Being described as a combination of art and science, Chiropractic is categorized as an alternative medical system. This health care discipline and profession is historically rich and controversial in terms of development and struggle for legitimacy. In modern times, this branch of health discipline is only popularly known to treat a simple backpain. But taking a look at its history, its wide study and theoretical foundations, we may appreciate this field and consider it for more significant health issues.
As a matter of fact, during the first chiropractic adjustment performed in 1895 with janitor patient named Harvey Lillard, Dr. Palmer was able to restore hearing. Seventeen years back, Lillard reckoned that he became nearly deaf after he experienced a ‘pop’ in his back while working in a cramped area. Dr. Palmer discovered a sore lump at his back and applied the technique of repositioning the vertebra with a gentle thrust. The treatment became successful after several sessions and this established the breakthough of this branch of health practice.
To clearly define its scope of practice, the World Health Organization pronouncely consider Chiropractic as a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). There are two major views being considered in terms of Chiropractic practice coverage. First, it is proposed to specialize only in nonsurgical spine care without attempting to treat other health issues. Second is called the expansive view which is still a widespread view in certain states nowadays.
As a complementary medicine, chiropractors obtained the role of referring patients to appropriate medical specialists, or co-manage with another health care provider in spinal manipulations, joints and soft tissue rehabilitation procedures, or even lifestyle counselings to promote health. This field of practice already include a wide range of diagnostic methods like skeletal imaging, tactile assessments, orthopedic and neurological evaluations.
Chiropractors are faced with limitations or difference in scope of practice in view of different state regulations. License to write medical prescriptions is not granted to Chiropractors mainly in the U.S. but this is allowed in several states.
Nowadays, the Chiropractors’ participation in occupational health, sports medicine and health rehabilitation practices is the emphasis or center of Chiropractic profession. This is done hand-in-hand with other health care professionals such as medical doctors and physical therapists.
Based on the holistic belief about the effect of Chiropractic to health wellness, it is attributed also for treating certain conditions not directly related to the spine or joints. These conditions include asthma, indigestion or irritable bowel syndrome, palpitations, high blood pressure, and infantile colic. Chiropractors practice the theory of self-healing. They developed a natural, drug-free, and non-surgical health care that is proven very effective in the area of complementary medicine.
